Why You’re Still Explaining Yourself Calmly to People Who Don’t Deserve It

You’ve made this argument to this person before. Third time, maybe fourth. Your voice is level, your points are numbered, you are being so reasonable it’s almost a performance.

The Woman Who Had to Argue Her Way Into Being Human

When The Second Sex came out in 1949, the response wasn’t disagreement. It was ridicule dressed as concern — critics calling her frigid, unfulfilled, a woman writing eight hundred pages to explain away her own bitterness. Mauriac wrote to a colleague asking, with mock delicacy, about “the vagina of Mademoiselle Beauvoir.”

She didn’t answer with anger. She answered with more argument. More footnotes, more careful distinctions, more of the exact tone that respectable philosophy demands — because the tone was the price of admission. Rage would have confirmed everything they already believed about her. So she metabolised it into prose so measured it took decades for people to notice how furious the book actually was.

That’s the part nobody tells you. The compliance wasn’t weakness. It was the entry fee.

The Tribunal You Never Agreed to Enter

Beauvoir’s real subject wasn’t men. It was the structure she called being cast as the Other — the position where you don’t get to simply exist, you have to justify your existence, and you have to do it using a logic somebody else designed, in a language somebody else finds acceptable.

Man is the self. Woman is defined against him, has to explain herself in his terms, using his standards of what counts as reasonable.

You know this courtroom. It’s the Thursday afternoon Slack message you rewrite four times to remove anything that could be read as sharp. It’s the family dinner where you present the calm, structured version of why you left the job, the relationship, the city — because the unstructured version, the true one, would get you filed under “emotional.” It’s the boss who says “just walk me through your thinking” in a meeting where your thinking was never actually the problem.

Every time, you’re not just stating a fact. You’re auditioning for the right to be believed, in a courtroom where the other person is both the judge and the opposing counsel, and the rules of evidence were written to favour them before you walked in.

The exhaustion isn’t the disagreement. It’s the translation labour — taking something true and legitimate and running it through a filter that strips out anything that sounds like feeling, so what comes out the other side is palatable enough to be heard at all.

You do this so often you’ve stopped noticing you’re doing it. That’s the part Beauvoir would recognise immediately.

The Cost of Being Reasonable

Here’s what nobody mentions when they praise you for “staying so calm about it.”

Every time you translate the rage into an argument, you confirm the premise that the rage needed translating. You accept the tribunal’s authority by showing up in its language. The in-law who dismisses you the moment your voice rises isn’t reacting to volume — they’re enforcing the rule that says your case is only valid when it doesn’t sound like a case that matters to you.

Beauvoir called this a kind of complicity. Not because women were choosing bad faith, but because the alternative — refusing to translate, refusing to perform composure — usually meant simply not being heard. Not being heard at all. So the translation felt like the only door in the room.

The uncomfortable part isn’t that you’ve been doing this. It’s that some of the people you’re still doing it for stopped deserving the effort years ago, and you kept performing anyway, because the performance became the only version of yourself you knew how to defend.
