Is it really political parties that are undermining democracy, or are we looking at something deeper?
Maybe the social experiment is collapsing under the weight of its own success. Liberal democracy, as it emerged after the Second World War, brought freedom, rights, and increasing room for the individual. But that very success also accelerated individualization.
And when individualization goes too far, collective capacity starts to disappear. The shared ground beneath society begins to erode. What remains is fragmentation, polarization, and a struggle between isolated interests, identities, and voices that no longer carry much together.
In that sense, political parties are not simply the cause. They are also an expression of a society that is losing its social fabric.
The thing is, what do you replace it with? There is no easy answer to this. Don't get me wrong, I have a problem with both parties and would not feel bad if both are dismantled. We need something better, that is for sure.
Issue voting is the most radical alternative I see in regarding this... logistically way more difficult, but... doable, it seems. Most other alternative voting systems get something better but ultimately it's a very difficult problem to work around.
right. Well, for what it is worth, it's a conversation we should all keep talking about, but keep ourselves well-informed. I also feel we should not overload ourselves with too much information and still try to make the best of our existence.
That's the very kernel of all this... Two problems in one: First, on how to balance it all, which seems to be the most worrisome problem we have, yet -- and here is the second problem, it is not talked enough about.
What is being suggested actually somehow works in many of the European countries, which is also the concept of EU. However, It is now at a point that EU countries started to struggle about holding this democracy. In my opinion, the reason is the increase of the populist parties. The reason why those parties (or figures) are becoming "popular" is, I believe, another discussion, but my opinion is that those parties are very based on ideologies and polarisation, and therefore, directly or indirectly, they shape the way of understanding and function of democracy into something else which is mentioned as undermining. It is now a trend that those parties seem to be very democratic very people focused but when they take the charge, they slowly start using democracy to demolish it. I believe another discussion should be how can we prevent people or parties to use democracy in a way to destroy it or Is it against democracy to keep people (or parties) away from democratic system even though they would like to demolish it?
collective capacity immediately suggests leaders committes and the rest made up of individuals like political parties then the end of democracy or democracy controlled by individuals and why democratic socialism or capitalism failed using leders and parties as a front really for authoritarian opposite of democracy that hasnt served us well since 2ndWW Freedom? what freedom? The converse of property taxes as we have, (or no tax) is balanced out by the things those taxes pay for from military policing to poor relief could (& i wd argue is already if not for policial party interference) essentially be provided by ourselves and each other since those very properties that call for property taxes or or not cause the need for military police and poverty relief in the first place. The Community Charge paid by house/landholders and Business charges paid on profits/marginal value against costs, represent already a land tax that extends to countries as import/export taxes although countries would not need to exist as severally&temporally grouped market exchanges, as we have now, making use of local/global credit trade investments on 1:1 credit/debit loans less reasonablke costs on costs/expected value controlling but not skewing the economies against unwarranted speculation or dirt poverty. against inter-national party system clearly not working for everyone, or anyone except the authoritarians who rule the world, global emporers as they see themselves, we need to reimagine democracy, and take democratic power back with proportional representation based on fair4all economics, signed the ragged trousered philanthropist

I loved this.
