There’s a specific moment, usually near the end of a good hour — hands in dishwater, or halfway up a hill, or three bites into something you cooked slowly for once — when a thought arrives before the pleasure does: this would make a good post.
Not a decision. A reflex. The moment hasn’t finished happening and some part of the mind is already drafting the caption, cropping the light, deciding which version of this experience is shareable. The walk becomes content before it becomes a walk. Somewhere in the last decade, the audience moved inside the head and stayed there, uninvited and permanent.
That’s the week, really. Not phones, not burnout, not the economy. Something quieter and further in.
The question none of the pieces answer
Every thread this week pulled toward the same knot: if everything about a person can be counted, packaged, or turned into income — the walk, the friendship, the hobby, the face — is there anything left in there that isn’t for sale? And if there is, how would you find it, given that the search itself has started to feel like a personal branding exercise?
This isn’t a rhetorical flourish. People are genuinely unsure. Ask someone what they’d do with a free Saturday and watch how quickly the answer turns into a plan for output — a draft, a project, a “thing to show for it.” The instinct to convert has gotten ahead of the instinct to simply have an experience, and most people can’t remember which one came first.
Two doors, still closed
Wednesday goes looking for where that instinct actually came from — and lands somewhere older and stranger than “capitalism made us this way.” The case made there is that the sick feeling of turning a passion into a business isn’t a personal failure of discipline or love. It’s structural, it has a name, and once you know the name you start seeing the same wound in half the adults you know. That one stays behind the door for members.
Friday takes the opposite entrance. It opens with a claim that sounds backwards the first time you hear it — that the thing making anyone valuable was never the output at all, and that this is precisely the reason a machine that can produce infinite output still can’t touch it. Sit with that for a second before deciding it’s wrong.
Neither piece is named here for its ending. Only for the door.
The one thing worth saying plainly
Here’s what nobody quite says out loud: the exhaustion people describe isn’t from working too hard. It’s from never getting to just be the thing without also managing, marketing, and narrating it to some invisible panel of judges. You don’t just have a life anymore — you run one. Founder, PR department, and product, all in the same body, all at once, all the time.
Somewhere in that arrangement, the founder forgot they were also the customer.
The open question, then, isn’t how to optimise the self better. It’s whether there’s a version of an afternoon that has no audience at all — not the internet, not a future version of you reviewing it, not even the quiet internal narrator who’s been drafting captions since you were a teenager. Try to remember the last time you did something with genuinely nobody watching, including yourself.
Most people can’t. That’s the whole week, in one sentence.

For me, the impulse to produce something of worth to others, an impulse that is definitely exhausting and despiriting, is rooted more in a sense that I haven't yet found a way to make my life meaningful (measured by contribution to the "greater good", not by likes, subscribes, salary). Everything written here rings true for what I see around me, everywhere, and I also think a society centered around technology and consumerism can still produce a spiritual/existential crisis in those of us who don't post to social media or judge their output by its financial value.
It's the modem dilemm. I rest, then I feel inspired and want to create. But when does creating stop feeding good and inspired and become something that traps you into a cycle of overwork.
