The email arrives at 4:47 on a Friday. Restructuring. Some roles affected, others not yet decided, more information Monday. Fourteen minutes later someone in the group chat asks if the team lunch is still happening Tuesday. Someone else confirms the reservation. By 5:15 the calendar invite for next week’s sprint planning has already gone out, unchanged, as if the email never landed.
Nobody in that chat is stupid. Nobody has failed to understand what happened. They have simply done what the week required of them, which was to keep functioning as though the week had not changed.
That’s the whole week’s spine, really — not the news, but the reflex. The instinct to keep performing composure at the exact moment composure stops making sense. It happens in companies mid-collapse and marriages mid-collapse and coastlines mid-collapse. Everyone keeps their appointments.
The question we’re sitting inside now is not whether the system is failing — we already agree it is, in at least one part of our lives, this week, this month. The question is why the people inside a failing system are still the ones expected to supply the calm. Who benefits from your composure? And is it possible the composure isn’t a personal virtue at all, but a kind of unpaid labor the system quietly requires to keep failing slowly instead of all at once?
That’s where the week is heading. Luxemburg spent her working life noticing that capitalism doesn’t need believers — it needs bodies that show up on time regardless of belief. She watched contradiction pile on contradiction and noted, almost clinically, that the piling never stopped the shift from starting at nine.
On Wednesday we go straight at the mechanism she was describing — not capitalism-in-general, but the specific question of why a system in visible crisis still requires calm, productive people inside it, and what exactly that calm is doing for the system that panic wouldn’t. It’s a stranger answer than “keep morale up.” [That one’s for members.]
Friday’s audio opens with a claim that will sit wrong for the first few minutes and then stop sitting wrong at all: that your composure this week wasn’t evidence you were handling things. It was the thing preventing anyone above you from having to.
Here’s what we can say now, without borrowing from either piece: functioning normally inside a situation you know is unsustainable is not neutral. It has a cost, and the cost is usually paid in the currency of noticing. Every day you keep performing fine, you get slightly better at not registering that you’re performing it. The composure doesn’t just hide the crisis from your manager, your partner, your government. Eventually it hides the crisis from you.
Which leaves the actual question, the one this week keeps circling and won’t yet answer: if staying calm is what the system needs from you in order to keep going wrong at a manageable pace — what would it need you to do instead?
