I think a big difference between past crises and our present situation is the complete lack of any intellectual discourse within, or coming from, the White House. Reason, historical awareness, or even a balanced policy debate seems unlikely. The leadership is solely one, and certainly one-sided - not at all driven by any consensus building. And there is also an obvious lack of empathy; greatly needed when choosing the right language and tone - current messaging, rhetoric, and rapid dismantling of essential institutions (including soft-power tools), ignores and risk lives around the world, even domestically. The president just repeated his determination to ‘take’ Greenland. He, to the delight of the Israeli government and Israeli lobby, states Palestinians have no further right to their territory. That treaties and relationships with allies like Canada, Mexico, Panama, and Europe no longer matter. He will surely pay no attention to historical precedence’s, or ethics for that matter. He has been given the power to destroy everything.
Besides that, thanks for the Stack. Do you know what he thought about H Arendt and her take on nationalism?
I am somewhat doubtful that he was given them power; he rather took it
