Biography of Ludwig Wittgenstein

In 1929, Wittgenstein returned to Cambridge to teach at Trinity College, acknowledging that he had more philosophical work to pursue. He became a professor of philosophy at Cambridge in 1939, but his teaching career was interrupted by World War II, during which he worked as a hospital porter in London and a research technician in Newcastle. After the war, he resumed his academic responsibilities but resigned his professorship in 1947 to concentrate on writing. Much of his writing during this period took place in rural Ireland, where he sought solitude for his work. By 1949, he had completed all the material that would later be published posthumously as Philosophical Investigations, which many consider his most important contribution to philosophy.

Wittgenstein's later years were marked by an intense focus on the nature of language and its relation to philosophical problems. He spent his final years living in Vienna, Oxford, and Cambridge, continuing to work until his death from prostate cancer in April 1951.
